Is there a protocol when coding suicidal ideation? What key terms are we looking for?

Suicidal ideation R45.851 is categorized under Other Symptoms and signs involving emotional state. Suicidal ideation means the patient has suicidal thoughts. It is not to be coded for a suicide attempt. It is often used along with Chapter 5 mental health dissorder codes like F32.0, Major depressive disorder, single episode, mild.
